Expand your Garden Route experience with a few days’ foray into
the Little Karoo.
Just 110km from George, Uniondale (on the R62) is the gateway to
the other Cape: so close to drives, cycling or hikes through
spectacular canyons and kloofs – Baviaanskloof, the Prince
Alfred’s pass, the Kamanassie Nature Reserve, or de Vlugt.
Discover the oldest San cave paintings in South Africa, enjoy
game viewing, birding, golf or horseriding. You might explore
the option of looping your Garden Route journey through
Uniondale, over the mighty Swartberg mountains, via Prince
Albert, perhaps visit an ostrich farm in Outshoorn and then on
to Cape Town through the lush Hex River Valley farmlands.
Zeru (from the Shona meaning “yesterday”) House offers a traditional Karoo experience with all the mod cons. Built about ten years
before the outbreak of the Boer War as the official residence of
the local attorney, the house later became the offices of the
Divisional Council.
Restored to its former glory with
traditional yellowwood floors, ceilings, and sash windows, this
well-appointed guest house offers old-fashioned hospitality with
simple, freshly prepared fare on request. We specialize in local
fresh produce where possible, and cater for vegetarians.
Our fabulous Karoo verandah has views of the Kamanassie
mountains and is a great place to watch the world go by.
At Zeru House, our aim is to provide an experience that will
ensure that even if you arrive as strangers, you will leave as
friends. We have spacious, clean en-suite guest rooms in the
main house, or a self-catering cottage (ideal for families).
